Defining your vision for the day is the first step to starting the search for a wedding site. Have you been saving different photos from wedding sites in magazines or from the web? If so, be aware of what they have in common and you will discover the constants you find appealing. Once you understand this, you will have an idea of the qualities the location must have to accommodate your vision.

Is an outdoor space for the ceremony important or  a spacious dance floor? Do you want separate areas for cocktail and dining?

Do you want intimate charm such as one of the historical estates, a water site, or a blank space that you can decorate completely with lighting and theme décor?

Also consider your ‘colors’ when visiting a site. Silver and blue may go beautifully in one location but look truly out of place in another. Taking a sample of your colors with you can help.

When visiting a potential site, note the lighting indoors and out, at the time of day of your reception. Lighting can be key in creating an atmosphere so don’t hesitate to ask the site manager to show you what lighting exists. If you are fortunate enough to book a year in advance, you can see what the location and grounds will look like the following year on the same date..

A location that is already lovely and needs little ‘help’ can be a cost saver. Decorating a ‘blank space’ can be a fantasy vision that can be an expensive project in décor and labor.

Make sure to consider only sites that will accommodate your guest count. So many couples count on a ten or fifteen per cent loss of the invited guests, only to find that EVERYONE invited can attend and the wedding site can’t accommodate the number. Remember to be aware of the site’s ability to accommodate walker, wheelchairs, or other challenges your guest’s might face.
